Everyone loves to be around a peacemaker. The peacemakers we’ve been around are people who find the positive about everything, even when things look bad. We will be the first to admit that achieving peace does not always come easily; however, if we do not work toward peace, we will fall short of Jesus’ declaration. Jesus declares in Matthew 5:9 (NASB), “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Peacemakers understand that an atmosphere of turmoil and hate is undesirable, but an environment of peace promotes intimacy. It’s a mature person who is a peacemaker.
So, how do we navigate those times when things start to turn into conflict? First, start with damage control. Don’t add fuel to the fire. If you notice a conversation begins to get heated…STOP! Most conversations end the way they start. Second, calm your emotions down. Help move yourself from anger and fear to understanding. Get yourself busy doing something that helps lower your tension. Third, pray for peace and understanding and that you will act in love. Fourth, you need to be able to explain the other person's perspective. What could be accurate or partly true about their position? Fifth, come back together and discuss with the person how you can arrive at a win-win solution.
If your conflict is with your spouse, your responsibility to live in peace is even more at stake. When you have peace in your home life, you create an environment where each person can thrive. In our workshops, coaching, and getaways, we start with the concept of “We Win.” It takes a sincere desire of both people to want to work together (We) to arrive at solutions where the relationship “Wins.”
Plan: This week, think about where you need to grow and use the above steps to help in times of conflict. Do you need to grow in stopping, calming your emotions, praying, seeing the other person's perspective, or working on a win-win solution? Ask God to help you walk into taking ownership of what you need to change.
